The Psychedelic Furs is an old boy band. In fact, it all began thirty years ago. The very young brothers, Richard, Tim and Simon Butler started a band, which rehearsed in Richard’s front room. Richard and Simon played the guitar, and Tim the bass. A friend played on the drums, and they made their debut under the name RKO.
The drummer however did not agree with the tree brothers in the stile of music, the behaviour at the performance and so forth, so he left the band. Then the band changed its name to Radio, and for a short period, several new members of the group came in and left again, and the group once again changed the name, this time to The Psychedelic Furs.
Richard now began to create a concept for the band. He met briefly with Andy Warhol and got inspiration from Warhol’s concept of a rock band.--Velvet Underground. The Furs were struggling, but not with good results, and once again the name was changed, this time to The European. This was only for a very short time, and they went back to The Psychedelic Furs.
Now something happened, which should be of great impotence for the group.- - Duncan Kilburn, one of the persons who previous had a connection to the group, went back. He was full of new ideas, and brought his saxophone, which he in the meantime had learned to play. Then they got a permanent drummer with the name Paul Wilson. This was all to the better, but still not enough. Shortly after they were introduced to John Aston and his girlfriend Tracy, and then things began to gel. John joined as the Furs other guitarist, and Tracy became the manager of the group.
All this took place over three years, and we are now in the year 1979. The group is beginning to get engagements around in London, and in October 1979 Howard Thompson signed them to the record company Epic, and their first LP came out in 1980.
The Furs has a special way to express themselves as a group, and I think that, that in the beginning of their carrier, and also now and then later on, created many of their difficulties, but every single member of the group is very competent at his work. They all “go for it”, and they know their skill.
In the early nineteen’s there was a brake in the issues of the group. After twelve years of recording and touring, Butler and the other group members grew tired of being The Psychedelic Furs, and in 1991 they decided to go their own ways. In 1994 Butler founded a new band, but they only got moderate success. Since then Richard Butler walked closely with writer, producer, multiinstrumentalist John Carin, who’s resume includes work with Pink Floyd, Pete Townsend (The Whoo`s), Brian Ferry and others, and in 2006, he came up with an a new record called Richard Butler.
In the beginning of the 2000 years, The Furs have made new records, and they are, ( in the last days of 2006, and the beginning of 2007), very busy with live concerts in New York, Philadelphia, etc. etc.
The sound of their music is clear and loud, and in mine opinion very qualified for ring tones. You can find them at this side among screensavers and other things.
